Fathers Against Drunk Driving also known as FADD was established
in 1987 and has
grown internationally over the years. “The idea of starting FADD
came after I lost a
couple of close friends that I loved very much, both of them
were in their early 20’s and
it was a senseless loss. I am also a father and have had some
growing pains in my life,
so it was easy to commit the time in making this a reality, to
spread awareness of the
dangers of drinking and driving,” stated Robert Ybarra founder
of FADD.
“I started picking up friends after a night out drinking and
would provide them a safe ride
home, it just grew from there 20 plus years ago. I called this
Provide-A-Ride and have
worked closely with nightclubs on holidays in my community and
ready to spread this
program to other states across America,” Ybarra concluded.
FADD has also worked closely with other substance abuse and
mental health services
and federal organizations. FADD has partnered to promote
awareness in the form of
mailing thousands of brochures with an important message, “
Under
Age Drinking Myths
vs. Facts,” was a title of the most recent brochure.
FADD’s
“Mission” is to provide public awareness and help
reduce alcohol related deaths
within communities nationwide. Getting the message out through
different media about
the deadly consequences of drinking and driving would be most
important. Second
would be providing people a safe and sober ride home, the
service of
Provide-A-Ride
is provided free of cost. To underwrite the costs FADD has
solicited sponsors and
donations from corporations with the same mission. FADD is now
in the planning stages
of opening offices in several cities in the United States and
also in Canada.
FADD applied for and received a grant from the
National
Endowment for the Arts
to produce professionally produced commercials or “public
service announcements”
(PSA’s) as they are called in the industry about 21-years-ago.
The PSA’s were produced
using all the tools available in the trade and the final edited
spots were made available at
no cost hoping to stimulate action, knowing there is a lot of
work to be done.
FADD is planning to produce more of these “public service
announcements,” with
today’s digital world these would be easily available to anyone
worldwide. These are
produced to educate and remind us of the deadly consequences of
drinking and driving,
raising awareness of an issue affecting everyone’s life’s every
day.
